Counting is an important skill for preschoolers, and you can teach them basic math skills very early on with simple activities like this one.
Objects around the house to be “counted” and “measured,” like shoes, blankets, pillows, toys, and books
Objects to use for “counting” and “measuring,” like wooden blocks, socks, cotton balls, or other uniformly sized toys or items
Choose an object to be measured, such as a book.
Ask your preschooler to place the book on the floor, and lay blocks down one by one until they reach the length of the book.
Then, measure the length of the book by counting out the number of blocks.
You can do this with a variety of items around your house – like pillows, small furniture, rugs, and more!
This activity helps your preschooler develop language, motor, early math, and social-emotional skills.
